Acquired Physical Disabilities – Stroke, TBI, MS, ALS...

For adults Who have had a stroke or another acquired physical disabilities, their progress toward improvement is significantly affected because of the emotional lability that is often a result of their awareness of loss of communication, speech ability and writing and reading skills. It is important to use successful right brain function and multimodal activities that focus the individual on skill acquisition and not their lost abilities. FONEMZ dissociates from the alphabet so that the learner is not reminded of lost skills (like reading). The presentation of the FONEMZ colorful shapes in conjunction with each sound assists in memory of this sound production is supported by their right brain. Remember, sound and language registers in the left hemisphere of the brain and color and shape registers in the right hemisphere. Most strokes that affect speech and language occur in the left hemisphere.
