The Speak and Read Program - 5 Milestones

A milestone is a significant point in development that is often necessary to progress to the next skill level. Milestones are hierarchical! This is true with speech and language development and with the use of FONEMZ. Phonemic awareness is essential before one can move on to effective speaking and reading.

There are 5 easy and very important steps to consider when using FONEMZ.

1

The first thing any person newly introduced to FONEMZ must learn, is that every shape represents one specific sound. Each shape has a different sound that is always associated with it. No two are the same. They are all unique in sound and the way they are produced.

Ideal for toddlers/young adults & students/adults.

Milestone 1: Introducing Individual FONEMZ/Phonemes

2

Milestone 2: Combining Consonants and Vowels

With this milestone, the student will combine, from left to right, FONEMZ in CV and VC combinations. These verbally will make the appropriate phoneme combinations associated with those FONEMZ. The goal is for the student to understand that sound combinations are used in making words.

3

Milestone 3: Associating Sounds with Words

As new sounds/FONEMZ are introduced individually and in syllables, from left to right, more associations are made with real words. FONEMZ may be combined from left to right in CVC combinations that associate with real words and/or non-words. The student will verbally make the appropriate phoneme combinations associated with those FONEMZ. The student will focus more on the concepts of first, next, last and beginning, middle, and end sounds.

4

Milestone 4: Building a Simple Word

With this milestone the student will consistently combine, from left to right, in CV or CVC combinations that associate with real words. The student will verbally make the appropriate phoneme combinations associated with those FONEMZ. The student will understand that sound combinations are used in making words. The verbal production will be modified accurately when sound combinations are altered. Given numerous choices (4 to 10) student will identify sounds as first, next and last.

5

Milestone 5: Associating FONEMZ/Phonemes with the Alphabet—Spell and Read

In order to move on to this milestone, a student must be able to combine FONEMZ to build real words with little or no cuing. The student will be given two choices of letters, along with the names of the letters. The correct letter or letter combination used in the word, is the same color as the FONEM. The other choice letter is not the same color. In this way, the student will always make the correct choice. After all letters are placed, the student will recite the letters once again, thereby spelling the word. The student will tell which word they spelled, thereby reading the word.
