FONEMZ products are integrated in our evidence-based, multimodal program which brings a fun, hierarchical approach to ​Phonemic Awareness, Speech Sound Production, ​Spelling, and Reading. The FONEMZ program utilizes a different color along with a different shape to represent each of the phonemes in English. These products can be used independently and together for different stages of development.

1. Felt FONEMZ - Hands-On Word Building

FELT FONEMZ is an extremely effective and fun tool for improving phonemic awareness, speech sound production and literacy skills for students 9 months to 90+ years old. Designed to draw children into an interactive FONEMZ activity, these sturdy felt shapes illustrate turn-taking by sticking to fibrous fabrics such as clothing and aprons.

 

Felt FONEMZ utilize vision, touch and movement to:

  • Improve focus using multimodal interactive activities

  • Teach turn taking

  • Allow students to feel in control of their learning

  • Used with individuals or a whole class for teaching sound symbol association.

  • Used in isolation, syllables and words

  • Use with puppets is thrilling for young students

  • Can be crumpled and retain original shape

1b Teaching turn taking: 

Place the target FELT FONEMZ on the shirt of the teacher.  The teacher makes the sound.  Then, when it is next adhered to the child's shirt, the same behavior/sound is expected. This becomes clear very quickly.

 

Puppets eat FONEMZ:

Another useful attribute of felt is that it retains its original shape even if it is crumpled.  It can, therefore, be placed within one's hand, in a container or in a puppets mouth and be smoothed out to its original form.

3. Magnet FONEMZ - Hands-On Word Building

Magnet FONEMZ - Portable Word-Building Fun

​

Magnet FONEMZ are perfect to use on the magnetic white boards that are in so many classrooms, hospitals, and professional settings. This product can be used in many of the same ways and in many of the same types of activities as the Fun FONEMZ as well.

 

As part of the FONEMZ program, the magnetized colorful letters can be easily held upright to place in proximity to the face while the sound is being produced.

 

• Compare for likenesses and differences.

• Demonstrate the “Vowel Circle”, which is a comparison of each vowel to other vowels for

jaw height and mouth shape (see Vowel Circle).

• Place linearly, in a left to right format, to emulate a syllable or word sequence.

• Associate with pictures and objects by initial, medial and ending sounds.

• Use with magnetic pictures and objects that are readily available from many distributors.

Mastering Sounds & Letters - Transitioning to Spelling for All Ages

 

Once the student can build words with the Felt, Fun or Magnet FONEMZ, which happens

quickly after she begins to recognize the FONEMZ combinations as specific sounds, the student can associate the FONEMZ with FONEMZ Plus and/or FONZABET letters. The relationships between sounds and letters can be clearly demonstrated by putting the FONEMZ Plus and/or FONZABET letters under each of the FONEMZ in a word.

 

Middle and High School students can experience autonomy by controlling the sounds during warm up exercises in an articulation session. Target sounds in these instances can be combined with various vowels of the student’s choosing. Self-directed, self-reflective instruction facilitates student ownership of goals and solidifies learning. This self-confidence is critical for older students as it can carry-over into real world situations.

4. FONEMZ Combined Programs -

FONEMZ Plus - Developing Phonemic Awareness

​

FONEMZ Plus are for students who have begun to make letter/sound associations using FONEMZ, and are not for students who have been newly introduced to FONEMZ or have not evidenced the phonemic awareness acquired through the use of FONEMZ.

FONEMZ Plus - Building on Letter/Sound Associations

 

A multi-sensory approach that utilizes color, shape, text, movement and sound to teach speaking, reading and spelling, FONEMZ Plus guides students from sound awareness to reading. This unique product consists of two inch squares on which each of the FONEMZ is represented with the alphabet letter or letter combinations that are most often associated with the FONEMZ affixed above them.

 

Once a student has demonstrated phonemic awareness by “building” words with FONEMZ, they are ready to start making the sound symbol associations with the alphabet. This is also a good time to begin introducing the “real spelling” of words. When we use FONEMZ for sound blending, we use the terminology: “build” words, or “make” words. The term “spell” is only reserved to describe the combination of letters of the alphabet.

6. FONZABET - Orthographic Combinations

The FONZABET is a file of cards with most possible letter combinations for each phoneme, done in the same color of the FONEMZ that depicts that sound. In other words, the actual letters are the same color as the FONEMZ that they represent. Most phonemes/FONEMZ have more than one possible letter combination that makes that sound. The FONZABET consists of over 250 orthographic combinations.Once the student can build words with the FONEMZ volitionally, they have demonstrated that they can recognize the FONEMZ combinations as specific words.

How does the FONZABET Work?

 

• The use of color and shape in a "right brain" function and improve focus for a "visual learner".

​• Copious research studies show that multimodal learning facilitates memory.

• Left to right progression in reading and spelling is solidified.

​

•  Once students can build words with the FONEMZ, which happens quickly after they begin to recognize the FONEMZ as a specific sound, they can easily associate the FONZABET letters with the FONEMZ because of the color. 

 

•  The FONZABET consists of almost every orthographic combination in English for each phoneme in the color of each of the FONEMZ.

•  Most sounds have more than one possible letter combination that makes that sound in different words.
